The U.S. Navy says it has developed a laser weapon designed to ward off attack from both air and sea threats.
The Navy released a demonstration video Monday, showing the new weapon shooting down an unmanned drone. The weapon eventually will be capable of disabling small enemy vessels and surveillance drones.
Officials say the cost of the laser will be less than $1 per shot since it runs on electricity, far less than the thousands of dollars it costs to fire one missile.
The laser will be mounted on an amphibious transport docking ship that will be deployed to the Persian Gulf in 2014.
