A legislative commission approved and reported out Tuesday a proposal that would allow municipalities to install sidewalks without charging low-income residents in adjacent homes.
Under current law, municipalities install sidewalks and then bill the adjacent homeowner or occupant. They have eight days to pay the charge or face a 50 percent fine.
The proposed law gives the municipality latitude to evaluate the economic condition of the persons living in the adjacent home. The application of the proposed law, if passed by the full legislature, would seem to expedite the installation of sidewalks in low-income areas.
