The poster mom for today, Mother’s Day in Costa Rica, is a grandmotherly woman who shot it out with would-be hijackers overnight in Desamparados.
She is Sara Ortíz Esquivel, and her heroism could not have come at a better time. The Ministerio de Gobernación, Policía y Seguridad Pública did not let this public relations moment pass. Staffers quickly obtains a brief biography of the 22-year police veteran and announced that she has six children and 15 grandkids.
Officials will be giving her a decoration for heroism today. She also was credited with protecting the life of a motorcyclist who was a tipster and bystander.
Officials said that 11 rounds were fired in the encounter that led to the arrest of two men.
The drama took place at Plaza Cucubres in Calle Fallas de Desamparado.
The Fuerza Pública said that the motorcyclist alerted the officer that a car was chasing a truck. When she caught up with the vehicle, Ms. Ortiz said the men inside insulted her and began shooting. The bullets put pockmarks in nearby walls, and Ms. Ortiz managed to keep the tipster safe.
Eventually more officers arrived to support her. Two men, 22 and 24, were taken into custody. Police put bags on their hands so that tests could be made to see if they fired a weapon.
Ms. Ortiz is a coordinator of a crime prevention program. The ministry quoted her saying that she was thanking God that she could celebrate the Día de la Madre today safe and sound.
