Coordinator hired for rust

The United States says it has hired a regional coordinator housed at the regional Guatemalan coffee association, to provide regional emergency coordination and disseminate best practices to combat coffee rust. Coffee rust is a destructive fungus that infects a coffee plant’s leaves, causing them to yellow and drop prematurely, thereby reducing yields and bean quality, the government said.

Much of Central America is experiencing s serious outbreak of the fungus, which is expected to reduce crop yields at least 8 percent, according to the International Coffee Organization.
