Power company will get a new lease on life from lawmakers

Lawmakers in a committee Tuesday acted to extend the life of the Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz. The firm will be allowed to operate for 99 more years if the full legislature approves the bill.

The action was in the Comisión de Asuntos Agropecuarios.

The state firm sells about 46 percent of the electricity used in Costa Rica. It has about 510,000 customers, mainly in the Central Valley.

The firm has seven generating plants of its own, all hydro operations. And it has a wind generating field. The company buys additional power from the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.
