Today is the last day to pay the marchamo or road tax without a surcharge.
Vehicles on the highway without the marchamo sticker after midnight will be subject to a 47,000-colon fine, and traffic police are making an effort to find them. Last year the traffic police nabbed 150 motorists on the first day.
The Instituto Nacional de Seguros said that its central office on Avenida 7 will be open from 8 a.m. until noon today. Some banks also will collect marchamo fees, as will payment centers in supermarkets and a number of insurance agencies.
Most offices will be closed Wednesday, New Year’s Day, so Thursday will be the first day for paying a late marchamo. The amount varies with the value of the vehicle, but motorists admit that the fee is higher this year.
There are about 1.2 million vehicles in the country, and owners of more than 250,000 had not paid the annual fee by midday Monday.
