High court hears version from top law officers

The nation’s chief prosecutor and the head of the Judicial Investigating Organization were before the full Corte Suprema de Justicia Monday afternoon to explain the role of their agencies in the Diario Extra case.

Executives of the daily newspaper said that one of their reporters had his telephone tapped because investigators were trying to find out who leaked information to the press.  The newspaper also said that a photographer and a reporter were beaten by agents on another occasion.

Both Jorge Chavarría Guzmán, the fiscal general or chief prosecutor, and Francisco Segura Montero, director general of the judicial investigators, maintained that the wire tapping was part of another investigation and not directed at the reporter.
