Poet and a sculptor honored with top cultural prizes

The nation’s top cultural awards are going to a poet and a sculptor.

The minister of  Cultura y Juventud, Manuel Obregón, announced the awards Monday.  The poet is Julieta Dobles, She is a 70-year-old former professor who has published four books of poetry mainly about Costa Rica.

The sculptor is Evangelista Blanco Brenes, 75, of Zarcero, who took a former sports area in his town and turned it into a magical garden with figures made out of bushes and trees. The park is in front of the  San Rafael Arcángel church. He was awarded the Cultura Popular Tradicional prize.

He has been working in the garden since 1964 and has created about 100 figures. He said he is creating an elephant now.

The awards will be presented at a future date.
