Transport officials have another major highway crisis on their hands.
A section of the Interamericana highway gave way Saturday, and the roadway is blocked at a place called El Vivero between Esparza and San Ramón.
The east-west highway at that point is a shelf road with a drop off to the south. Highway officials and police are encouraging motorists to use Ruta 27, the Caldera highway, and to avoid this stretch of the Interamericana.
There are plans to put a temporary new lane at the site, but that probably will not be in service until the beginning of the week. There is a gravel road that allows motorists to bypass the collapse, but the roadway is not considered appropriate for truck traffic.
Road problems like this are frequent in the section of the highway that goes through the central mountains.
