An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 took place today in the Pacific close to the Middle America Trench where the Cocos tectonic plate is forcing its way under the lighter Caribbean plate. This is an area of continual activity. The epicenter was estimated to be about 98 kilometers (about 61 miles south of Pavon de Golfito. The time was 3:52 a.m., said the Laboratorio de Ingenieria Sismica at the Universidad de Costa Rica.
