A day for remembering

Today is being celebrated as Memorial Day in the United States. Dating from the U.S. Civil War, the day is a time to place flags and floral offerings on the graves of deceased veterans.

But the day also marks the unofficial start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The day also is a time for cookouts and family gatherings because it is a legal holiday.

For Costa Rica, this is the beginning of the frugal tourism season when students, recent grads, teachers and others enjoying a long school, college or university vacation do their traveling.

For some the most important part of the weekend already has taken place.   Ryan Hunter-Reay denied Helio Castroneves of Brazil a record-tying fourth title by passing him on the 200th and final lap of the 500-mile [805 kilometer]  Indianapolis 500 race Sunday in Indiana. His margin of victory was only six-100ths of a second.
