The Banda de Conciertos de San José will honor the European Union Sunday at the Museo Nacional with a concert featuring works from Euroepan countries.
The free concert begins at 11 a.m. In addition to the museum and the band, a sponsor is the Embassy of the European Union.
The band will be accompanied by soprano María Marta López, tenor Ernesto Rodríguez and baritone William Hernández. They will interpret the works of Italian composer Gioachino Rossini.
Among the works that have been planned for the band are:
The “Overture 2000,” completed in 1990 by Dutch composer Henk van Lijnschooten; the 1982 piece “Alternances” by André Waignein of Belgium; “Mask” by British composer Kenneth Hesketh, “The Ride of the Valkyries,” written by the German Richard Wagner; “The Impossible Dream” from “The Man of La Mancha,” honoring Spain; the “Toreador Song” from the opera “Carmen” by Georges Bizet and honoring France, and excerpts from “Les Misérables” by Claude-Michel Schönberg and based on the novel by French author Victor Hugo.
