Costa Rica broke into another round of World Cup celebration Friday after the country’s national soccer team beat favored Italy in a preliminary match in Brazil, 1-0.
The win puts Costa Rica in the top 16 bracket from which the world champion will emerge. The only score in the game came on a late first half header by Bryan Ruiz. That was enough, even though Italy had a longer possession time.
Costa Rica was coming off a stunning 3-1 win over Uruguay, while Italy opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over England.

Ruiz beat Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to make the single score. After than Costa Rica played a cautious game, and the members of the Italian team became increasingly desperate.
The Italians had many shots on goal, but most went wide or high.
Costa Rica plays England Tuesday, but the team already has qualified from the four-team group where it was considered the underdog.
