Costa Rica with one player down struggled to hold of onslaughts by the Greek national soccer team and ended up winning the game Sunday on a shootout.
Bryan Ruíz scored the only Costa Rican goal early in the second half. A red card brought the team strength down to 10 a short time later. So for the rest of the second half the Ticos held the Greek team scoreless until the first minute of extra time.
That put the game into 30 minutes of extra periods, and neither team was able to score. The game was decided by penalty kicks.
Each team received five shots on goal. Costa Rican goalie Keylor Navas blocked the fourth Greek attempt, and the Tico players scored on all five shots.
The country went wild to celebrate the first time the national team reached the World Cup quarterfinals. Stronger teams, just as México did not. That team was on its way home after a loss to The Netherlands. earlier in the day. Costa Rica next plays the strong Dutch team.
