The defensora de los habitantes cut short a dispute Monday by resigning.
Henry Mora, president of the Asamblea Legislativa, said he received a letter from the defensora, Ofelia Taitelbaum, who had just been reappointed to a four-year term by the previous legislature almost unanimously.
Ms. Taitelbaum, a long-time political figure, faces accusations that she forged or had forged various documents in order to hide income from tax inspectors. The case is under study by the Judicial Investigating Organization. It involves tax reports by Costa Rican corporations.
Mora said that the important issue now was the selection of a replacement as soon as possible.
