Despite drought conditions, rains still eat roads

Strong rains have taken out part of the road running along Lake Arenal, creating an enormous crater on the shoulder that has forced officials to close one lane. Monday the national roadway agency known as the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad announced the closure of the Ruta 142 lane after a team of engineers assessed the area.

The Consejo which is in charge of road repairs and planning in Costa Rica, said the slide occurred between Tapón and Nuevo Arenal  on the north side of the lake.  The location is northwest of La Fortuna.

This is a typical collapse on this highway because a watercourse parallels the road for some distance. The road also has hosted even more gigantic collapses and sinkholes.

An agency report said the section of road is expected to be fully accessible again by Wednesday. Rains have also brought numerous landslides along the same road, and the Consejo has hired contractors to clean those up, the report said.

Since before he took office, President Luis Guillermo Solís has vowed to dismantle the Consejo and have the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes restructure road maintenance.

A collapsed highway lane near Nuevo Arenal is fairly typical and likely to be repeated all over multiple times during the rainy season.
