An earthquake estimated at a magnitude of 4.7 took place in the hills northeast of Quepos about 2:50 a.m. today. Central Valley residents who were up at that time felt the shaking.
The epicenter was relatively shallow, estimated at 20.5 kilometers by the Laboratorio de Ingeniería Sísmica at the Universidad de Costa Rica. That is about 13 miles. The area of the epicenter is not heavily populated. The Laboratorio said the epicenter was 11.8 kilometers south southeast of Sabanilla de Acosta and 16.5 kilometers north of Damas de Quepos.
