Former reporter named defensora

Montserrat Solano Carboni, 38, has been named the defensora de los habitantes.

She emerged victorious on a third ballot among legislators Tuesday afternoon.

Ms. Solano is a former journalist and a staffer at the Estado de la Nación. She has a record of involvement in human rights causes. Among others, she was supported by the Partido Liberación Nacional.

The defensora supervises a staff that is supposed to answer questions and intercede for citizens in the governmental bureaucracy.
