Government officials have agreed to move tourism out of second place and back into a free-standing economic sector under the minister of Turismo.
That was the result of a meeting of Wilhelm von Breymann, the tourism minister, with Melvin Jiménez, minister of the Presidencia, and the minster of Planificación, Olga Marta Sánchez.
Last month a decree put Tourism as a subsector under the economics minister. That made tourism officials unhappy.
But all is not sweetness and light.
The Cámara Nacional de Turismo said Tuesday that it would present two administrative actions against the Dirección General de Tributación and the Ministerio de Hacienda. Such actions are one way of exhausting remedies before going to court.
Tourism leaders are upset by the central government’s plan to assess 13 percent sales tax on activities and also to seek six years of back taxes.
The tourism chamber will go to the Tribunal Contencioso Administrativo and perhaps the Sala IV constitutional court if there is no administrative satisfaction.
