Five men kidnapped a plant exporter in Guápiles, and the suspects turned out to be his own employees.
The Judicial Investigating Organization said that the man, 56, was lured to a location on the promise of an export deal. There he was forced into another car, blindfolded and tied up.
The kidnappers demanded 120 million colons, about $220,000. That was late Thursday. Eventually the crooks settled for 40 million colons (about $73,500) in negotiations with a family member.
The deal was that the money would be delivered in a public street in Belén de Heredia while the kidnapped man was released near the Hospital de Guápiles.
Judicial agents were at both locations and detained three men in Belén and two more in Guápiles, they reported.
