Lawmaker seeks to ban girls from beauty pageants

A leading lawmaker has proposed a ban on beauty contests involving contestants under 16 years.

He is  Humberto Vargas Corrales of the  Partido Unidad Social Cristiana. He presented the proposal Thursday.

The bill also proposes prior censorship of the media by forbidding publication of any promotion of such events when they involve youngsters under 16 or adults pretending to be under that age.

The  Ministerio de Educación Pública and the  Patronato Nacional de la Infancia would be charged to define and adopt a policy of prevention and fight against what a legislative summary said was all forms of eroticism in girls, boys and adolescents.

The text of the bill is not yet available, but it is said to be short and just nine articles. The proposal quickly found support among some other lawmakers, said the summary.

Another lawmaker has proposed a bill that would prevent marriage by anyone under 18.
