Preserve Planet opposes park plan

The environmental organization Preserve Planet came out Wednesday against proposals to allow the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad and private companies to install geothermal electrical generating machinery inside national parks.

There are two bills proposing that in the legislature now. One was put forth by Ottón Solís of the Partido Acción Ciudadana and the other by Otto Guevara of Movimiento Libertario.

Luis Diego Marín Schumacher of Preserve Planet said that there was no way to install such a setup in national parks without affecting the fragile ecosystem.

Many geologically active areas are near volcanoes and inside national parks.
