The national tourism chamber is raising the alarm about a proposed law that would cut in half the money available to promote the country.
The Cámara Nacional de Turismo said that a bill is in the legislative hopper that would give half the money raised by a tax on airline tickets to the Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación, Right now, the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo gets the full $15 levied on air tickets purchased outside the county.
The chamber said it wanted the legislative Comisión de Ambiente to dump the measure, which is No. 18.251. If the bill passes, the Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación would be instructed to use its share of the money for purchasing or expropriating land for national parks.
