Cartago declines to pass ban

The council of the Municipalidad de Cartago declined to pass a ban on genetically modified crops during a Saturday meeting.

Activists say they kept the council from voting against the measure.

The activists attributed the council’s lack of action to pressure from the Escuela de Biotecnolog¡a of Tecnológico de Costa Rica, the local public university.

Activists say they are expecting that the legislature will pass a national ban on genetically modified crops. Such a bill is in committee.
