Drug discovery brings call for security

The exportation of 300 kilos of cocaine to Rotterdam has embarrassed officials here and has caused them to crack down on port security.

The drugs were in a container holding agricultural produce.  Dutch police intercepted the load. Alexander Mora, minister of Comercio Exterior, called the drug shipment an isolated event. Still he has enlisted a host of government agencies and the Cámara de Exportadores de Costa Rica to create more secure ports in Moín and Limón.

The minister said that such events tarnish the image abroad of Costa Rica. The additional security will include scanners and other non-intrusive devices that can check containers, said the ministry.
