Lawmaker wants plan to end street wars

On the anniversary of the day when Costa Rica abolished its military, a lawmaker called on the central government to eliminate the new armies, the violent street gangs that cost human lives everyday.

The lawmaker, Maureen Clarke Clarke, said that there have been 285 murders already in 2014.

“We abolished the army many years ago, but today the violence in the streets do not honor this accomplishment,” she said on the floor of the Asamblea Legislativa.

The Liberaci¢n Nacional lawmaker called upon the central government to outline and make public a strategy to combat these statistics.
