Antipoverty agencies have handed out 752 million colons, about $1.4 million, to more than 500 women who want to run their own businesses.
The agencies are the Instituto Mixto de Ayuda Social and the Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres. The purpose of the program is to provide seed capital for economically disadvantaged women who seek to develop their own businesses.
Friday the initial grants were given to women in the province of Puntarenas. The remainder will be distributed by the end of the year. The women will be involved in hydroponic agriculture, ranching, recycling, graphic design, retail sales, baking, and even dog grooming, said an announcement.
