Costa Rica will open a consulate in Shanghai in an effort to attract more Chinese tourists, Casa Presidencial said Wednesday.
Tourism officials also are trying to arrange direct flights from the Asian country to Costa Rica, they said.
Casa Presidencial said that President Luis Guillermo Solís had held a meeting with the director of the China National Tourism Administration.
Manuel González, the foreign minister, said that the new consulate would speed up issuing documents for tourists and for commercial purposes.
Solís said that the Chinese are exploring the possibility of participating in EXPOTUR in May. This is the exposition where some of the country’s tourism operators show their wares.
