Residents of Nueva Cinchona marked the sixth anniversary of the deadly earthquake with a Mass Thursday at the new community that resulted from the tragedy.
The quake destroyed or made many homes in the area unsafe, and earthquake victims were living in plywood boxes for several years. The 91 families eventually were relocated to a safer area in new homes with new utilities. The project was by the Comisión Nacional de Prevención de Riesgos y Atención de Emergencias with the assistance of many other agencies.
The afternoon earthquake took at least 34 lives and nearly twice that number remain missing. The quake loosened a ridge that collapsed.
