Two U.S. patrol planes spotted a suspicious boat some 130 nautical miles off Limón late Sunday.
Two Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas launches intercepted the open boat with the help of Colombia and the United States, the security ministry said.
The crew of the suspicious boat threw packages into the water. When recovered, the coast guard said there were 38 sacks and 16 packages of marijuana.
Officials said they thought the boat was inbound from Jamaica and carried high grade marijuana for the local market.
Five persons on the boat were detained.
