Barrier job seeks to make Cartago highway safer

Workers are about to start on a project that eventually will put a barrier between east and westbound lanes of the Carretera Florencio del Castillo to prevent head-on crashes.

The firm of  Constructora Hernán Solís has won a contract to begin eliminating anything that protrudes above ground level. Eventually the barrier will be built in the central median of the highway. There also are plans for barriers along the outside of the lanes to prevent vehicles from going off the highway.

The highway is the main road between Curridabat and Cartago.

Workers also will be covering the gutters with rebar so vehicles will not overturn.

The project is in several contracts that amount to more than $2 million. The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad has been ordered by the court to do some of the work in a decision that stemmed from an accident.
