Opponents of the $1 billion container-handling terminal in Moín are not giving up.
A group of environmental organizations announced a protest for 11 a.m. today at the Secretaría Técnica Nacional Ambiental offices in Barrio Escalante. This is the agency that gives environmental permissions.
They said they are protesting the environmental destruction caused by the terminal and the government.
The organizations said that the spark for the protest was the displacement and destruction of turtle-nesting sites in Moín.
The announcement of the protest said that some $5 billion would be spent in the area.
In addition to the container-handling terminal, the announcement listed another port, a gas plant, marinas and a free trade zone.
The announcement singled out the road that the government has constructed to reach the proposed container facility as something that has destroyed mangroves and caused the cutting of trees.
The announcement came from 12 entities, including a political party and the office of a legislator.
