Highway officials are promising that a bypass at a slide on the Interamericana Sur will be finished in three weeks.
The location is at La Cangreja at 35 kilometers north of the border with Panamá. This is a key highway that carries a lot of freight and agricultural products. A detour had been in use since half the highway dropped down a cliff Jan. 30. However, the detour has been out of service since Friday because of the poor condition of the road and rain.
The Consejo de Vialidad received permission from an adjacent landowner to dig into the embankment alongside the ruptured highway to create the temporary lanes.
Meanwhile, engineers are trying to figure out how to make a permanent fix.
Traffic officials are suggesting a wide detour, perhaps through the Constanera Sur and Buenos Aries de Puntarenas. And national officials and those from the Municipalidad de El Guarco are trying to improve the detour so it can be used again. This is a route that goes through La Estrella.
