Talamanca dumps Facebook page with negative comments of expats

The Municipalidad de Talamanca took down its Facebook page Friday morning shortly after a news story appeared saying that the mayor wanted two expats to leave the canton.

A letter critical of the two expats had been the centerpiece of the Facebook page.

There was no explanation from the municipality. Carol Meeds, a U.S. expat singled out by the mayor,  Melvin Cordero Cordero, said he was irked because she had posted a summary of an A.M. Costa Rica news story noting that a number of cantons had not prepared zoning plans for the maritime zone.

The other expat, Philippe Vangoidsenhoven, who is from Belgium, faced criticism in the latter for filing multiple environmental complaints. Ms. Meeds said he did so because the complaints never got responses. The situation made news because having a public official post negative statements about residents is highly unusual.

In addition, Ms. Meeds said she thought the mayor had fingered her to crooks because he claimed she has a large pension.
