Traffic police zero in on drag racing

The Policía de Tránsito is outlining all the actions it took in 2014 to prevent drag racing, and officers promise more coordinated action with other agencies this year.

Drag races are in the news because one vehicle went out of control and killed an 81-year-old pedestrian earlier this month. That mishap took place in Pavas not far from the U.S. Embassy.

Mario Calderón, director of the traffic police, said his agency’s efforts are mainly preventative. Officers arrive at a location known for drag racing and begin inspecting vehicles for compliance with the law.

No one died as a result of drag racing in 2014, but there was at least one death in 2014, also a pedestrian.
