The second Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional concert of the season is tonight and Sunday with famed Korean pianist Kun Woo Paik playing Chopin.
John Nelson is once again the invited conductor.
A highlight will be the performance of “El Duelo de la Patria.” composed by Costa Rican Rafael Chávez Torres.
The program begins at 8 o’clock tonight in the Teatro Nacional.
A repeat performance is Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
The program also includes “Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11,” by Frédéric Chopin and Antonín Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op. 70.” Both were composed in the 19th century.
Chávez Torres was mostly a 19th century figure, too. He was director general of the country’s military bands. When former president Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez died, Chávez Torres composed his mournful work. This is the funeral march that bands usually play in the Good Friday processions.
