Two robbers fatally wounded a bus driver in Heredia Tuesday afternoon. This prompted a massive police search that included a helicopter.
Officers detained one suspect who turned out to be a 16 year old.
The search centered on the low-income communities of Guararí, La Milpa and La Cuenta where the robbery took place.
The bus was at a stop when two persons threatened the driver and then shot him in the side, said the Judicial Investigating Organization. The robbers stole the sponge that drivers use to hold money.
There was no estimate of the amount, but the sponges hold mostly coins.
The driver was identified by the last name of Fernández. He was shot about 1:30 p.m. and died 45 minutes later in the Hospital de Heredia.
Meanwhile police mustered a large force to search the area. They surrounded the communities where they thought the robbers had taken refuge. The 16 year old was found in his own home, said the Fuerza Pública. The second suspect still was at large early today.
Bus robberies are common, particularly in low-income areas.
