Power rates going down . . . for now

Electrical rates are getting as variable as gasoline prices.

The national regulatory agency said it has approved a reduction of 19 percent in the price of electrical generation.

The decrease will benefit 1.5 million users, said the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos.

There also is a reduction in the charge for distribution, but the percentage of the cut depends on the company providing the services.

Meanwhile, the agency said that a request for an increase is pending from the principal electrical generator, the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.
