A French tourist died Sunday when he and companions were on a sports fishing boat that sunk in the Golfo Dulce off Cabo Matapalo on the Osa peninsula.
The Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas identified the dead man as Aubers Nicolle, 49. The security ministry said he was the father of Antane Nicolle, 15, and the husband of Lidie Nicolle, 48, who survived. The fourth passenger was identified as Cedric Lemarie, also 48.
The Costa Rican boat captain was Eider Esteban Cortés Vega, 29, said the Guardacostas.
The mishap took place about 2:45 p.m., when the boat appears to have overturned in strong winds and choppy seas. The boat was identified as Golfito Sport Fishing Extreme.
The crew of a sister boat to the sinking craft was reported to have provided initial aid.
Some of the surviving passengers suffered injuries, said the Guardacostas. They were reported to be in the gulf making videos.
