Twin quakes rattle south central part of country

Two quakes 10 minutes apart rattled the southern part of the country today.

The first was 16.4 kms. north northwest of San Isidro de El General at 12:32 p.m. The magnitude was estimated at 4.7. The second was in the same area, and the epicenter was estimated at 15 kms. northwest of San Isidro de El General, said  the Laboratorio de Ingeniería Sísmica, which estimated the magnitude at 4.8.

Despite the similar locations and magnitudes, the second quake was felt stronger in the metro area, some 56 kilometers from the estimated epicenters.

The estimated magnitudes are sufficient to get the attention of residents nearby and perhaps cause some smaller items to fall to the floor and rattle others.
