The 10-meter fiberglass statue of Jesus Christ in San Rafael Norte de Pérez Zeledón was destroyed by a lightning strike, fire investigators have confirmed.
They reported Thursday that there was no sign of accelerants or any evidence of arson. In addition, the Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad agency that keeps track of lightning strikes confirmed that five bolts hit the ground in that area between 4:49 and 5:04 p.m. Tuesday, said the Cuerpo de Bomberos.
The investigators found that some of the fiberglass crystalized, something that requires a temperature of 1,000 degrees C, they said.
The entire body of the statue melted or burned.
