Merchants of the famed furniture center of Sarchí plan an 11-day exhibition of their goods along with cultural events, concerts and sports in the local central park.
The Feria de Muebles Sarchí is sponsored by the Cámara de Comercio Industria y Turismo de Sarchí with support from the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Comercio. The exhibition opens Thursday and runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the following Sunday, July 12.
The location will be in the old workshop of carretas Joaquín Chaverri in Sarchí Sur, and 30 furniture makers and 20 artists of different types are expected to be present. All are rated by the ministry as small enterprises.
The ministry said it is seeking to give the community an economic boost.
The local chamber said it is guaranteeing the moisture content and quality of the wood as well as the species used.
Most of the furniture will be of cenízaro (Albizia saman), guanacaste (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), cedro amargo (Cedrela odorata), melina (Gmelina arborea) or teca (Tectona grandis), the chamber said.
Sarchí is about 50 kilometers west of San José, some 31 miles.
The community is an obligatory stop on nearly every tourism trip because of the many furniture shops and other attractions.
