Some of those flexible posts that are being placed on the center line of Ruta 32 lasted less than 48 hours.
Traffic engineers said Thursday that someone risked their life and took time to unscrew some of the posts to steal them.
Others appeared to be the victim of vandalism. They were damaged.
The posts are seen as a way to reduce head-on crashes on the key highway that leads out of San José to the north and then to Limón.
The posts have no commercial value, and them mystery remains as to why someone would take the trouble to steal them. The Dirección General de Ingeniería de Tránsito said it filed a complaint with the Judicial Investigating Organization.
