Tourism chamber to help collect Caja debt

The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social reports that 228 tourism businesses are behind on their monthly payments.

The Caja has made an agreement with the Cámera National de Turismo to help clear the debt of those member firms that are behind. The Caja says that 78 of the 455 members of the chamber are behind in payments.

Some 936 tourism companies are not chamber members, and of these 150 are behind, said the Caja.

The Caja said that its total debt in the tourism sector is 3.7 billion colons or about $7 million.

Employers are supposed to make payments for each employee each month based on the salaries received.

Tourism is the sixth largest sector that is behind with payments, said the Caja

The thrust of the agreement is that the chamber will approach its members who are behind and help set up a payment plan, said a joint announcement. The Caja suggests an initial payment of 20 percent of the debt owed with monthly payments after that.
