Two bills put focus on cultural identities and rights

Lawmakers are being asked to set up a special investigation of the human rights enjoyed by the native populations.

In addition, a measure that would insert multiculturalism in planning, education and culture has advanced out of committee. Sandra Piszk Feinzilber. who heads the legislative  Comisión de Derechos Humanos, linked the two measures Wednesday.

She said that bill calling for the study of the current situation of native peoples was No. 19.364 and that the proposal was to open a special office directed to the needs of the various native groups.

She also said that one job of the new office would be to see that the native groups are consulted on legislation. Certain agreements require such consultations, but frequently this requirement is overlooked.
