The 191st anniversary of the Anexión del Partido de Nicoya July 25 is expected to attract 800 horse and riders, including a delegation from Nicaragua.
The Asociación de Caballistas de Nicoya is putting on the event that starts at 4 p.m. that day. The group estimated the attendance.
Nicoya is located well to receive horse and riders from Guanacaste and the peninsula. Heavy participation is expected from Nicoya, Hojancha, Nandayure, Santa Cruz and the other cantons of Guanacaste, as well as the Central Valley.
The Nicaraguan contingent is from Santo Domingo in the Departamento de Chontales, said the association. Some 40 riders are expected.
Anexión marks the decision in 1824 when leaders of the area chose to join with Costa Rica instead of Nicaragua.
The day also attracts central government officials who conduct a consejo de gobierno in the local park.
There also are likely to be protests, which is usual for the day.
The Asociación de Caballistas said that Costarricense de paso horses will participate. The organization said that these animals are of the bloodline of horses brought to the New World by the Spanish at the time of the conquest.
The horse parade or tope forms at the plaza del Barrio Santa Lucía and will weave a route through the barrios of Nicoya, said the organization.
