Calypso returns again to Cahuita on the Caribbean coast with the III Festival Internacional de Calypso this weekend.
Organizers said that some performers are coming from Trinidad and Panamá.
The festival honors Walter Ferguson, the long-time Calypso performer of Cahuita.
The festival is sponsored by the Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud, the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Cahuita, the Instituto
Costarricense de Turismo, the Municipalidad de Talamanca and local business operators.
Organizers are promoting the event as a way to start the annual school vacation and enjoy the natural beauty of the southern Caribbean coast as well as the unique cuisine.
The festival starts Friday at 9 a.m. with community sports. There also is a mechanical bull scheduled, as well as break dancing
Also planned are Caribbean story telling and a series of concerts beginning at 2 p.m. After a 5 p.m. inauguration, a band parade is on the agenda.
The music resumes at 7 p.m. with the Calipso Legends, Canto América, Kawe Calypso and Manuel Monestel
Saturday there is a calypso workshop at 10 a.m., more music, an 11K run at 2 p.m. and a performance of the Ballet Folklorico Mi linda Costa Rica and the Banda Calypso Jawa at 5 p.m.
The musical evening ends with Chucky Roderick Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago performing at 10 p.m.
Sunday there is more music with a performance by The Gospel Messenger of Cahuita at 1 p.m. The final performance begins at 5 p.m. that day. A full schedule is posted HERE!
