The state insurance company has set up a group policy to cover lawyers for breaches of their professional obligations.
The insurance is voluntary, and the coverage can range up to 100 million colons, about $190,000, depending on the premium.
The group policy was announced Monday by Elian Villegas Valverde, executive president of the Instituto Nacional de Seguros, and Eduardo Calderón Odio, president of the Colegio de Abogados y Abogadas.
A spokesman for the insurance firm was unable to say Monday if the policies would cover fraud on the part of the lawyers.
The premiums are minimal. Coverage of 100 million colons is available for a monthly premium of 23,629 colons, about $45. Lawyers can opt for coverage a low as 5 million colons, about $9,500.
More than 25,000 lawyers are eligible, said the state insurance firm.
