Four ministries will roll out a proposal today for a new agency to promote innovation.
The ministries are Economía, Industria y Comercio, Ciencia, Tecnología y Telecomunicaciones, Agricultura y Ganadería and Comercio Exterior.
The presentation will be in the Museo de Jade on Avenida Central.
The government has promised that the new agency will not increase the bureaucracy. The idea is to make the business climate better for small- and medium-sized enterprises.
The government has said in the past that there are about 100 programs for small and medium enterprises that are operated independently.
The new agency is to direct these programs. The agency is the creation of the presidential Consejo Presidencial Económico. Instead of new financing the agency will take over financing that other agencies have been receiving, the government said.
The Luis Guillermo Solís administration has been promoting small and medium enterprises as a path to development.
The economics ministry runs the program for micro, small and medium enterprises. However government officials have said that the program is weak due to duplication in other agencies.
The new agency will require the passage of a bill, and legislative leaders have been invited to the presentation today. There is likely to be some opposition from agencies that do not wish to give up their various programs and financing.
The full title of the new agency would be the Agencia Nacional de Fomento Productivo, Innovación y Valor Agregado.
