Vice president chose private health care

Another high government official has chosen private medical care over that offered by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social.

Casa Presidencial reported Friday that Vice President Helio Fallas is recovering after an operation on his achilles tendon at Hospital CIMA. He is the last of a long line of public officials who chose Hospital CIMA or Hospital Clinca Biblica for care even though they are insured via their jobs with the Caja.

Fallas also serves as finance minister. He will be wearing a boot to immobilize his left leg for eight days, Casa Presidencial said.

In the last 12 years only Abel Pacheco, when he was president, chose Caja care. He was admitted to Hospital Calderón Guardia. In addition to being president, he is a physician.
